{"id":18555,"date":"2020-07-30T15:00:24","date_gmt":"2020-07-30T13:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.expoconsulting.eu\/?p=18555"},"modified":"2020-07-29T17:49:33","modified_gmt":"2020-07-29T15:49:33","slug":"trade-shows-restart-broader-perspective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.expoconsulting.eu\/en\/trade-shows-restart-broader-perspective\/","title":{"rendered":"Trade Shows are coming back: a broader perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Marco joined a Virtual Lunch in the <strong>Exhibit Marketers Caf\u00e9<\/strong> with Marlys Arnold, an American trade show specialist and <strong>Founder of the Exhibit Marketers Academy<\/strong>, to discuss how to help the industry go back on track and share interesting perspectives and insights on how <strong>things are being handled both in Europe and the US<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>We are about to restart, but what is still missing?<\/h2>\n<p>It has been a while since somebody started addressing the \u2018<strong>reopening of events<\/strong>\u2019, but now is pretty much on everyone\u2019s mouth. In Europe, many countries (including <strong>France, Germany and Spain<\/strong>) <strong>officially confirmed that trade shows will be allowed to take place again<\/strong>, most of them between the end of August and September.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the good news, almost none of the European countries <strong>had yet put in place clear guidelines and regulations<\/strong>. Most of the governments (Italy included) that <strong>stressed the need to reignite economy<\/strong>, travel and all the activities stopped due to Covid-19, <strong>have been vague or unclear about the restrictions<\/strong> (physical distancing, numbered tickets, limited entry, limited public transportation, etc.) regarding the restart.<\/p>\n<h3>Everybody on its own<\/h3>\n<p>With <strong>no hint from the European Union\u2019s institutions<\/strong>, every country <strong>acted on its own<\/strong> and applied laws and regulations they thought were the best to control the virus spreading.<br \/>\nFor instance, in Germany and France the reopening of big trade shows is subject to a <strong>new assessment of the epidemic<\/strong>, for fear of a second outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>situation in the US<\/strong>, as Marlys informed, is no better; <strong>every single state is acting on its own<\/strong> due to a complete lack of direction from the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<h3>Trade Shows reopening: profitable, yet abandoned<\/h3>\n<p>Even if Europe is not the only region affected by a generalized lack of clarity and conditions about the reopening, it should not make us happy.<br \/>\nTrade Shows and events generate more than <strong>three million jobs and a total estimated revenue of 303 billion dollars<\/strong>. These are important numbers, yet<strong> governments and politicians seem to underestimate the importance of the industry<\/strong>. This situation calls out for <strong>vision, long-term policies and special needs<\/strong> still unanswered to-date.<\/p>\n<h4>Looking for guidelines<\/h4>\n<p>Because of what\u2019s happening, exhibitors and attendees are <strong>stuck on an unpleasant limbo<\/strong>. Show organizers have to make the call:<strong> cancel, or be cancelled?<\/strong> Either it is too soon and <strong>they do not want to cancel an event if it\u2019s not necessary<\/strong>, or it is too late and they are carried away to the point &#8211; as it happened in the US &#8211; where <strong>exhibitors have already spent time and money to prepare for the show, but had more than one event cancelled on the very same opening day<\/strong>, right when they were setting up their booth.<\/p>\n<h3>What can we do about it?<\/h3>\n<p>UFI, the <strong>leading global Association of the exhibition industry<\/strong>, has been providing <strong>clear and precise guidelines<\/strong> about what markets will be allowed to reopen and the events scheduled in the future.
